Look Who's Coming!

Robert Newton
Thursday, November 19, 2009,
7:00 pm meeting of WHAL
Meeting location and directions

The West Hills Art League welcomes Robert Newton, our November demonstrator. Robert works in watercolor, oil, batik and encaustic. He will demonstrate in oil and discuss the painting process. Robert encourages questions and comments while he is demonstrating so feel free to speak out.

Robert Newton's "Pasture"

In Robert's words,

“I've done some kind of art ever since I can remember. I started out when I became serious with watercolor. I saw reproductions of Nat Youngblood and Frank Webb in the Sunday paper and was inspired by their work.

I painted by myself for years with little exposure. I was self conscious and more than a little timid, knowing that everything I painted came from deep inside my heart. It gave me the sense I was naked in public!

Not too many years ago I made a leap of faith and started painting plein-air with Ron Donoughe. It was hard at first painting in public, but soon the comments from people and painting in the company of other artists set me free, my fears subsided and I began to enjoy it very much...

I've been concentrating on painting in oils the last couple of years and like to demonstrate in oil. I've no formal education in art. Reading lots of books and being in the company of other artists has been a wonderful education.”

Cindy Gilberti would like to pass along a good link for a web site for and about art:

http://www.goldenpaints.com/justpaint/index.php

Check it out, very informative with information that covers just about everything that would be of interest to an artist.

Cathy V offers another website which she found when looking for inspiration before beginning work on a project using a limited palette.

Frank Web, Brittany, France!

WHAL members are very familiar with Frank Webb and his great demonstrations and workshops.  He is currenly offering a workshop in Brittanhy, France for this coming summer, June 17-27, 2010.

Frank will demonstrate a wide variety of approaches and will show you how to re-create your on-location subject with exciting shapes and juicy, luminous color.

Also, Frank is as adept at the spoken word as he is at the painted image. He salts his critiques with philosophical insights laced with a dose of humor and primed with enthusiasms.

Frank is always encouraging and has the ability to pull the best out of workshop participants.  In this workshop, Frank will introduce new realities beyond the mundane using design principles and creative expression.

Two day trips exploring the country and historical sites are included. Contact Flying Colors Workshops, 320 So. Gaylord St., Denver, CO 80209, phone 858-518-0949, FlyingColorsArt@me.com for more information
