Franklin Molin
Thursday, November 20, 2008,
7:30 pm meeting of  WHAL

We are honored to have art attorney Franklin Molin as our guest to speak and answer questions about intellectual property and law regarding the visual arts. Mr. Molin will discuss the basic laws of copyrights and visual artist rights (moral rights), and will also discuss some of the standard contract issues and other legal issues regarding the "business" aspects of being a visual artist. He will also reserve time to answer specific questions you may have on these issues.

Franklin B. Molin is a partner in the Pittsburgh Office of K&L Gates. He practices in intellectual property, arts and entertainment, and media law. He represents artists and arts organizations. He teaches copyright law at the Duquesne University School of Law, and lectures frequently on arts and intellectual property topics. He is a past Chair of the Arts & the Law Section of the Allegheny County Bar Association.

Party Time!
WHAL's Annual Holiday Party
December 18th
7:00 PM to 9:30 PM

Robin Hill will be the site for our WHAL Holiday Party.  It will be a covered-dish affair on Dec. 18th, from 7 PM - 9:30 PM - our regular meeting night.

Members are encouraged to bring their favorite dessert, hors devours, wine, or any edibles members might like to sample.  Spouses, family members and significant others are more than welcome as always!

This is a good opportunity to bring a friend who might be interested in meeting our members and seeing what our league is all about.

For directions see the Robin Hill web page.

Our October 16th WHAL meeting was a successful combination of brainstorming and goodtime conversation. Many thanks to all members who
participated for their input and suggestions. Additional thanks to Kim Kerr for the delicious homemade treats.

Below are some of the suggestions brought up with the end resolution:

*  November 30th will be the deadline for membership submission in order to retain your web page in our Artists Market on our league website, as well as to receive the newsletter via USPS.  Any member not renewing by this date will have to contact Cathy Vignolini to have his/her web page reinstated and Connie Serapiglia to have his/her name added to the newsletter mailing list.

*  An increase of the Annual Art League entry fee of $5 per piece was voted upon.

*  Monetary awards along with ribbons will be awarded to winners of our Annual Art League Show, due to the lack of response for requests by Cindy Gilberti for prize donations. The lack of interest in prize donations is believed to be in direct correlation to the present economic issues.

*  New venues of the Sewickley Library, Airport, PTI and the Montour Trail were suggested.  “Paint The Trail” was the suggested theme for the Montour Trail venue, whereby WHAL members would gather to paint outdoors on the trail.

*  A new date for the Annual Art League show at Robin Hill has not yet been secured; but it was suggested this be scheduled in April, with a theme show in Oct. ’09.

*  “Artist Tips” section in our newsletter and website was suggested.  Gather your tips and time-saving tricks! Please submit these to either Cathy Vignolini or Connie Serapiglia.

*  Demonstrators are needed!  Please submit suggestions to Elene Page.  One suggestion was to have a sketching session instead of a demonstrator, where we gather to sketch a live model or still-life.
