Tamara Cicogna
Thursday, April 17, 2008,
7:30 pm meeting of
WHAL
This month Tamara Cicogna will demonstrate painting on an
assortment of clays as an alternative to canvas. Tamara’s demonstration will
offer WHAL members the opportunity to see, firsthand, the wonders of this
medium and how many glazes perform like watercolors, acrylics or oils when
applied to clay.
She will also have a surprise hands-on project as part of
her presentation for those who wish to participate in the fun.
Tamara Cicogna has a very interesting background. Born in Bolivia, she came to the United
States as a child to attend boarding school.
Inspired by vacation travels with an art-focused family, she developed
an interest in watercolors, acrylics, sculpture and pottery. Art was always a
focus in her family so her travels helped her develop a great appreciation of
the colorful world around her.
Tamara's marketing and sales background left her little opportunity
to exercise her artistic talents. It wasn't until she retired that she found
her voice in art through decorative painting, ceramics, and porcelain
doll-making. In the past, her diverse
artistic talents included fine art painting (acrylics and watercolor), pottery
(thrown, hand-built and poured), and sculpture.
Today Tamara focuses on promoting the incredible art of
decorating stoneware, porcelain (china) painting and doll making. Her mission
is to expose the mystery of clay artistry in the hope that more artists will
find the pleasure that she has found.
A resident of Bethel Park, Tamara keeps busy as the mother
of four and the grandmother of six, including her 6-year old autistic granson
who she is helping to raise. (Please note a call for artists to participate in
the first annual Art for Autism Show.)
Tamara is a member of the Bethel Art League and believes
in the motto:
Live every day like it’s your last,
savor every moment,
life is not a dress rehearsal.
Art for Autism is looking for artists and crafters of all
media for their 1st annual show. The
show will be held on Saturday, May 31st and Sunday, June 1st at Boyd Community
Center, 1220 Powers Run Rd, Pittsburgh, PA 15238.
Table fee is $40 for both days. Event sponsors are
requesting that artists donate 10% of their profits from the show to Art for
Autism, an art scholarship fund for children and adults with Autism Spectrum
Disorders and other developmental or psychiatric disorders.

This workshop takes a simple and fun approach, showing
watercolor in a new light. The awareness of light is very important in painting
and its presence can greatly enhance any subject.
During this workshop, Peg Panasiti will help students find
fresh ways to look at subject matter, teaching them how to simplify their
subjects for more visual impact.
Students will work from a still life set-up. Ms. Panasiti
will take them on a step-by-step process, demonstrating each step as they
progress.
Ms. Panasiti advises her attendees to bring their
watercolor supplies, and their sense of humor. "Because we are going to
have fun." If you would like a list of suggested supplies, contact Pat
Panasiti at her email address: mailto:peg@pegspalette.com
The workshop will take place: Saturday, May 3, 2008
9:30 AM - 4:00 PM, Class is limited to 10 students,
Cost is $50 (check made to artist).

This month our
Gallery News is all about Sewickley. Gallery owners and other Sewickley
businesses recently partnered to create a new quarterly e-newsletter they
called The Village Muse.
April marked the release of their first publication. The
Sewickley Herald interviewed Mark Rengers, owner of the Sewickley Gallery and
Frame shop, about the e-newsletter. According to Rengers, "We want(ed) to
create a partnership between local arts resources and further the mission of
generating greater awareness to Sewickley's dynamic art scene."
The release of the first issue coincided with the April
11th Spring Gallery Walk in Sewickley and highlighted shows and other events
taking place at many Sewickley galleries, including Sweetwater Center of the
Arts, The Sewickley Gallery, Galerie Werner and more.
Currently your WHAL newsletter uploader (Cathy Vig) cannot
find any Internet links to The Village Muse for our members to browse online.
If you would like to be added to their distribution list contact Mark Rengers
at The Sewickley Gallery and Frame Shop: mark@sewickleygallery.com
