Demonstrator Corner
Look Who's Coming!

We are very excited to have Frank Webb as our guest demonstrator for the January 17th, 2008 meeting of the WHAL.

Mr. Webb's sixty years as a professional artist back up his current activities in painting, lecturing, jurying and writing. As an invited instructor he has conducted hundreds of workshops in 50 states and throughout the world. In 2006 American Artist Magazine included Frank Webb in an article “20 Great Watercolor Teachers.”

Going beyond the usual technical display of watercolor, Webb’s paintings express his interest in the creative concept and design principles. He stresses the importance of seeing, feeling, and responding to possibilities while synthesizing realism with abstractionism.

Webb covers a broad spectrum of subjects beyond traditional landscapes. His unusually sophisticated and idiosyncratic approach to watercolor is set forth in his three books: “Watercolor Energies,” “Webb on Watercolor,” and “Composition For The Painter.”  In these books he explores design, expression and the philosophy of art. He has also made five instructional DVDs.

Mr. Webb has more than 100 major awards and has earned Master Status with the National Transparent Watercolor Society. He is a vice president and dolphin fellow of the American Watercolor Society and holds memberships in several prestigious art associations one of which is an honorary member of the Jiangsu (China) Watercolor Research Institute.

This truly is an evening of exciting watercolor that is not to be missed.

Workshop Scheduled!

Elene Page has worked her magic and is sponsoring a Watercolor workshop with Frank Webb.  Mr. Webb is one of the nation's premier watercolor teachers and brings enthusiasm and energy to his classes, making painting an exhilarating enterprise.

"My work proceeds from on-the-spot graphite drawings made from a lifetime of travels. Each drawing is edited, fused with design principles, and used as the model. With large flat brushes and plenty of water I approach the paper in a slam-bang initial wash, and end with the caress of a butterfly wing."

About Chihuly at Phipps: Gardens & Glass
Dale Chihuly has created a dazzling fusion of art and nature here in our lush gardens. With vibrant colors, larger-than-life dimensions and a penchant for creative collaboration, Chihuly has revolutionized the way artists look at glass.

Always a believer that "more is better," Chihuly directs teams of people to execute his vision, both in the glassmaking studio and at exhibition locations such as Phipps.

This exhibit is stunning both in natural daylight and at  night when the installations are lit to highlight and focus on the outstanding color and design elements.  Definitely worth more than one visit as the light catches and changes with the time of day and the intensity of light.
