Alan Morris
Thursday, February 21, 2008,
7:30 pm meeting of WHAL
Alan Morris who is a watercolor artist,
a sculptor and sometimes paints in oils.
Alan's demonstration will be a watercolor “The Outer Banks” and shows how to do the one minute sky, reflections in wet sand, simple figures, and incorporating wet and dry techniques.
Alan Morris has enjoyed painting since childhood and is a self-taught painter. As he often says, art is 90% disciplined hard work and ten percent talent. His paintings might best be descried as abstract/realism. His usual practice is to portray just enough realism to be convincing and then to resolve the painting in abstract shapes and textures. Alan is not a colorist, so he utilizes contrasting values, line and texture as the predominate design features of his watercolors.
Alan is a self described minimalist. One of the more difficult tasks for the painter is knowing when to quit painting. He believes the painting is done when the story is told. While his watercolors are apparently very loosely done, design is a big part of his paintings.
Reveled in the human face and figure is the story of who the person is. In order to be convincing, the artist needs to identify that story and record it. It is never enough to be accurate. Alan’s work successfully captures the story of a person.
Alan is a juried member of the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society. His studio and gallery are in Sewickley, PA where he teaches watercolor to all skill levels. Alan will also conduct group watercolor workshops at the groups designated location.
