Look Who's Coming!

Alan Morris
Thursday, February 21, 2008,
7:30 pm meeting of  WHAL
Alan Morris who is a watercolor artist,
a sculptor and sometimes paints in oils.

Alan's demonstration will be a watercolor “The Outer Banks” and shows how to do the one minute sky, reflections in wet sand, simple figures, and incorporating wet and dry techniques.

Alan Morris has enjoyed painting since childhood and is a self-taught painter.  As he often says, art is 90% disciplined hard work and ten percent talent.  His paintings might best be descried as abstract/realism.  His usual practice is to portray just enough realism to be convincing and then to resolve the painting in abstract shapes and textures.  Alan is not a colorist, so he utilizes contrasting values, line and texture as the predominate design features of  his watercolors.

Alan is a self described minimalist. One of the more difficult tasks for the painter is knowing when to quit painting.  He believes the painting is done when the story is told.  While his watercolors are apparently very loosely done, design is a big part of his paintings.
Reveled in the human face and figure is the story of who the person is.  In order to be convincing, the artist needs to identify that story and record it.  It is never enough to be accurate.  Alan’s work successfully captures the story of a person.

Alan is a juried member of the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society.  His studio and gallery are in Sewickley, PA where he teaches watercolor to all skill levels. Alan will also conduct group watercolor workshops at the groups designated location.

Alan Morris is currently showing work at
The Washington Street Gallery,
Lewisburgh, WV, 304-647-4561 and
The Sewickley Gallery, Sewickley, PA, 412-741-5858.

The exhibit ran from Jan 13 to Feb 3 2008.

Carol also received a juror's award  for a pastel landscape at the Hoyt Institute of Fine Art Mid- Atlantic Juried Exhibit that ended mid December 2007

Sewickley Cafe Exhibition
The Sewickley Café has recently been an exceptionally good venue for Zoe Shutka.

They are currently featuring work by students under the private instruction of Zoe.  The students range in age from 3 years old to adults.

Dates for the showing are from January 6 to February 28th so there is still time to not only appreciate the fine work but also the fine food.

Also, the Sewickley Café was host to a recent one woman show by D. Zoe Shutka in which she sold nine pieces.  Doug Brown, Betty Phillips and her husband and a number of other WHAL members attended.
