Peggi Habets
Thursday, February 18, 2010,
7:00 pm meeting of WHAL
Meeting location and directions

The West Hills Art League welcomes portrait artist Peggi Habets, our February demonstrator.

Peggi is an award-winning watercolor and oil portrait artist. Her studio is located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, but she works with clients around the country. Her life-long interest in art and a 15-year career in graphic design and illustration have all led to her current calling as a portrait painter.

She was nominated as Pittsburgh Center for the Arts "Emerging Artist of the Year 2008".  Also her artwork has been selected and featured in the book “Best of America—Watermedia”, Vol II, 2010.  Other publications include “Watercolor Magic” magazine, “Palette” magazine, and the Portrait Society of America's “The Art of The Portrait” magazine.

Peggi is a member of Portrait Society of America, Associated Artists of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh Watercolor Society, and Toastmasters.  Her work is represented by Planet Art Gallery, Mount Lebanon, Pa and Double Door Gallery, Carnegie, Pa.

ARTIST STATEMENT
"Although my portraits capture the likeness of the person or pet I'm painting, I don't attempt to create portraits that look like photographs. Instead, I let the personality and characteristics of the subject I'm painting guide my decisions.

I bring my own style and ideas to the paper using color, brushstroke and composition to create mood and emotion. My greatest reward is to complete a portrait that captures not only the likeness of the person or animal, but more importantly, their unique personality."

To see some of the wonderful portraits Peggi has produced visit her website at
www.habets-studio.com.

Dianne Bauman Makes the News!

The following excerpt is taken from an article which appeared in the January 2010 edition of Allegheny West Magazine.

"The Drawing/Painting students of Montour High School have been busy making the high school colorful. The new art teacher, Dianne Bauman, did not know what to expect coming to a high school that has been under construction for three years. She noticed lots of bare walls. With permission from the principal, Todd Price, she decided to incorporate painting murals on the walls in her art classes."

1934 – A New Deal for Artists!
The Frick Art Museum
January 30th - April 25th

To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Public Works of Art Program, 1934: A New Deal for Artists was organized by the Smithsonian American Art Museum from their unparalleled collection of paintings created as part of the program.

From mid-December 1933 to June 1934, artists participating in the short-lived federal program were encouraged to depict the American scene, but were free to portray any subject. The 54 paintings in the exhibition were created by artists whose birthplaces spanned the country (and in some cases the globe), and who represent a distinctly diverse vision of America.

Pittsburgh artist Harry W. Scheuch (1906–1978) is represented by two canvases depicting the construction of the Cathedral of Learning on the campus of the University of Pittsburgh. Portraits, cityscapes, city life, landscapes and rural life are all captured in this exhibition which provides a unique and lasting visual record of America at a specific moment in time.
